it surprises me teachers like yourself and family members would use fp's. i thought it was a faux pas to do such things if you taught. have any of you tried to quit?
Yes, I have tried to quit using FPs when I teach, but with little success. I find that my rate of message conveyance doesn't change. So if I don't fill my pauses then I either leave long silent pauses or else iterate what was already said which makes my speech merely more redundant. However, I'm beginning to wonder if my students (Japanese learners of English) actually understand me better with the pauses because it gives them processing time (there is some research to support this notion: i.e., that speech with filled pauses is more understandable than speech with silent pauses or speech with no pauses).
