I am a Toastmaster and we spend a portion of our energies working to master our ums and ahs. We even have a person who at our meetings counts the number of ums and ahs and other speech abberations that might interfere with our clarity in speaking. It's a great way to become more conscious of this human tendency. We find that through our attention to this habit, we can drastically reduce our ums and ahs. Some experienced speakers can go a whole meeting for several weeks and never be caught uttering a filled pause. I thought I might use your material in a speech since I've never seen a scientific study. Thanks for your information.
