I am doing a paper on the use of "like" and "um" in the genders and your research helped a great deal.  I would really appreciate any other info you could give me on this subject.  Thanks.

I'm afraid research on gender differences in the use of FPs (filled pause) is rather scarce.  The only reliable source I've been able to find is the one mentioned on my site, as follows.

Eakins, B. and R. Eakins  1978  Sex Differences in Human Communication. Boston:  Houghton Mifflin.

However, you might also be interested in reading sections of my dissertation.   Although I haven't submitted it yet (and may still make minor style/proofreading revisions) you can read a draft version on the internet at the following URL.

In particular, I recommend section 4.3.2 FPs as mitigating devices.
